Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipSenator Bob Menendez could learn his fate soon with the jury expected to receive the case tomorrow Menendez faces more than a dozen felony counts including bribery and extortion the sitting Senator is accused of accepting bribes hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gold bars to help business associates and foreign entities senior correspondent Brenda Flanigan has been in court all day and heard some intense closing arguments and rebuttal Brenda tell us about today's session well Raven after nine weeks of trial and historic moment this jury tomorrow is going to begin deliberations in the corruption trial of Jersey senior senator now we've seen multiple Witnesses we even had a CO delay in this trial and jurors are now going to be considering 18 counts they will include bribery extortion and conspiracy and they're going to involve Bob Mendez and two codefendants now the FBI evidence in this case 13 gold B hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash cost the three- term Senator the support of many fellow Democrats this final day of legal arguments passionate fiery and sometimes angry this morning defense attorney Cesar de Castro told jurors that his client codefendant Fred Davies gifted Bob anden Menendez gold and cash out of Goodwill he said that prosecutors lacked hard evidence and wanted jurors to rely on inference and speculation and he said quote quot you can't do that to a man's life Raven Brenda you mentioned that it got fiery in court explain more about those fireworks well assistant uh us attorney Dan renthal during rebuttal offered some Fierce push back he's urging jurors to look at the evidence he said quote even if every single Dollar in this case went Puff the defendants would still be guilty on every single and he challenged the um accuracy of Menendez defense attorney Adam fee on uh his closing arguments on several points and fee exploded uh he said angrily quote he's calling me a liar uh he's he's accusing the government of using quote summation tricks the judge actually had to raise his voice in exasperation he ruled in favor of the prosecution but all day long we've seen several lengthy sidebars each side trying to hash out disagreements Raven it's a very high stakes trial and remember this is the second corruption trial that Menendez has fa the first one ended in a hung jury well high stakes and also long Brenda this has been a lengthy trial what lots of evidence for the jury to take in how long is this going to take well we have to look at judge Sydney Stein preparing two hours of instructions then he's advising jurors count by count you know how to apply the law what to consider what to ignore here's the jury sheet see all the little boxes they've got to check off 18 counts three defendants it's a lot of boxes to check can the jury deliver a verdict tomorrow in a single day that would be extraordinary but tomorrow will begin day one Raven wow what a journey thank you Brenda thank you
